In Singapore today ICANN approved the new gTLD program, setting a date of January 12, 2012 for acceptance of applications.
The application will close on April 12th 2012.
New gTLD extensions can be live and operational as early as November 2013.
The new gTLD program will allow any company to apply an domain name extension and operate a registry for a application fee of $185,000
Currently there are only 22 TLD.
Under the new program ICANN will allow up to 1,000 new extensions a year.
So soon you may have .cars, .gay, .blog as well as many geographic areas like .paris, .berlin and .nyc all of which cities have expressed interest in having their own extension.
At RIGHT OF THE DOT we are ready to assist applicants in maximize their profitability.
As no one knows when the second round of applications would open up, its clear it won’t be for quite a while, so anyone who has interest in operating a registry needs to get their plans in order as there is a lot of work to get done by the time the application period opens up in January.
